💡 Our Halloween Weekend Tips

  • Buy Tickets Ahead: Halloween weekend is one of the busiest times of the season, and Fast Passes may be worthwhile.
  • Dress for the Weather: Outdoor haunted trails, caves, and hayrides can be chilly, muddy, or uneven.
  • Check Age Recommendations: Many attractions feature intense scares, darkness, loud noises, and special effects.
  • Confirm Closing Times: Some locations stop selling tickets before the final guests finish.
  • Double-Check Saturday Schedules: Halloween falls on Saturday this year, but not every attraction necessarily operates both nights.

This Week's Featured Park

🍁 Caesar Ford Park: Where Nature, History & Adventure Meet!

Discover a Greene County treasure just outside Xenia.

Looking for somewhere new to enjoy the final colors of autumn? Just outside Xenia, Caesar Ford Park offers a wonderful combination of wooded trails, outdoor recreation, and fascinating local history.

This expansive Greene County park is a destination for hikers, cyclists, disc golfers, and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors.

And unlike some of the smaller nature preserves we've featured, Caesar Ford has enough activities to keep visitors busy for an entire afternoon.

🚶 Miles of Trails Through the Woods

One of Caesar Ford Park's biggest attractions is its network of approximately 10 miles of multipurpose trails.

The trails wind through wooded areas and rolling countryside, providing opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

During late October and early November, the landscape can be especially beautiful as the remaining autumn leaves add color to the forest floor.

The paved Xenia–Jamestown Connector also passes through the park, providing access to the Miami Valley's extensive network of recreational trails.

🥏 Try Your Hand at Disc Golf

Caesar Ford is home to an 18-hole championship disc golf course designed by professional disc golfer Gary Dropcho.

Disc golf is a fun way to combine a walk outdoors with a little friendly competition. Players throw specially designed discs toward metal baskets, trying to complete each hole in as few throws as possible.

Even if you've never played, it's an enjoyable activity to try with friends or family.

🎭 A Park with a Fascinating History

Longtime Miami Valley residents may remember Caesar Ford Park as the home of the outdoor historical drama Blue Jacket.

The production brought the story of Shawnee leader Blue Jacket to life in a large outdoor amphitheater, complete with elaborate sets, horses, and dramatic performances.

The show closed in 2007, but the amphitheater has since been restored and is now used for concerts and community events.

It's a unique connection to the area's cultural history.

🏕️ There's Even a Campground!

Caesar Ford also offers a modern campground with 12 full-hookup campsites, a shower house, picnic shelter, and playground.

It's an interesting option for RV travelers who want to explore the Greene County area.

The campground is undergoing expansion, so visitors should check current construction updates and site availability before planning an overnight stay.

📍 Plan Your Visit

🌳 Park: Caesar Ford Park
📍 Location: 520 S. Stringtown Road, Xenia, OH 45385
🎟️ Admission: Free for general park access
🕐 Hours: Sunrise to sunset, subject to special-event closures
🚶 Activities: Hiking, biking, horseback riding, disc golf, picnicking, and camping
🌐 Website: Official Caesar Ford Park Website

💡 Our Tip: Check Park Closures Before Visiting

Caesar Ford Park hosts seasonal events, including its popular Pumpkin Glow celebration.

The park was closed October 19–27 for Pumpkin Glow preparations and cleanup, and another extended closure is scheduled to begin November 9 for Park Lights preparations.

General park access is normally sunrise to sunset, but special events and setup can affect availability.

Before heading out, check the park's current closure notices .

🌟 Why It's Worth Visiting

Caesar Ford Park offers more than just a pleasant walk through the woods. It's a place where outdoor adventure, local history, and family recreation come together.

Whether you're exploring a wooded trail, trying disc golf, or simply enjoying the crisp autumn air, it's a wonderful way to experience another side of the Miami Valley.

🍂 This weekend, discover a Greene County treasure and enjoy one more beautiful autumn adventure before winter arrives!

Recipe of the Week

🍂 Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken & Gnocchi

A cozy, one-skillet dinner that's ready in just 30 minutes!

Looking for a cozy, delicious dinner that's perfect for a chilly autumn evening? This week's recipe is a real crowd-pleaser!

Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken & Gnocchi combines tender, golden chicken, pillowy potato gnocchi, fresh spinach, and a rich garlic-Parmesan cream sauce—all made in one skillet.

It's the kind of comforting meal that tastes like something from your favorite Italian restaurant, but you can make it right at home in about 30 minutes.
⏱️ Prep & Cook

👩‍🍳 Difficulty
Easy

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 package (16 ounces) shelf-stable potato gnocchi
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • ⅓ cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Season and Brown the Chicken
Season the chicken with Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F. Transfer to a plate.

2. Build the Garlic Cream Sauce
Reduce heat to medium. Melt butter in the same skillet and add minced garlic. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the chicken broth, scraping up the flavorful browned bits from the bottom.

3. Cook the Gnocchi
Stir in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the uncooked shelf-stable gnocchi, cover, and cook for 4–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi are tender. Add a splash of broth if the sauce becomes too thick.

4. Add the Cheese and Vegetables
Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the Parmesan cheese, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the spinach wilts and the sauce becomes creamy.

5. Bring Everything Together
Return the cooked chicken and any accumulated juices to the skillet. Stir gently until everything is coated in the sauce and heated through. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

6. Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle with fresh parsley and a little extra Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately while the sauce is warm and creamy.

⭐ Tips for Making It Extra Delicious

  • Use Freshly Grated Parmesan: It melts more smoothly than packaged shredded cheese.
  • Don't Boil the Cream Sauce: A gentle simmer keeps it silky and smooth.
  • Add Mushrooms: Sauté sliced mushrooms before adding the garlic for an earthy autumn flavor.
  • Make It Lighter: Substitute half-and-half for heavy cream, although the sauce will be thinner.
  • Serve with Crusty Bread: Perfect for soaking up every last drop of that delicious sauce!

🍽️ What to Serve Alongside

This dish is hearty enough to stand alone, but it pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad, roasted broccoli, or warm garlic bread.

❤️ Why We Love This Recipe

There's something special about a warm, creamy skillet dinner when the temperatures start dropping. This recipe delivers plenty of comfort without requiring hours in the kitchen or a sink full of dirty dishes.

It's also easy to customize with whatever vegetables you have on hand.

🍁 One skillet, 30 minutes, and a dinner the whole family will look forward to. That's our kind of autumn comfort food!

🏡 7 Things to Check Before Turning On Your Heat This Fall

Simple steps to keep your home warm, comfortable, and safe this winter.

As chilly mornings and colder evenings settle into the Miami Valley, many homeowners are getting ready to turn up the thermostat.

But before your heating system starts working overtime, a few simple checks can help you avoid unexpected repairs, improve comfort, and possibly save money on your winter heating bills.

Here are seven smart things to check before the really cold weather arrives.

🔥 1. Give Your Furnace a Quick Inspection

Before your furnace runs regularly, take a few minutes to inspect the area around it.

Make sure nothing is stored against the unit, particularly cardboard boxes, paint cans, or other flammable materials.

Listen for unusual rattling, banging, or squealing when the system starts. Strange noises, unusual odors, or repeated shutdowns can signal a problem worth having a professional inspect.

💡 Quick Tip: If you haven't scheduled a professional heating-system inspection this season, now is a good time.

🌬️ 2. Check Your Air Vents and Registers

Walk through your home and make sure heating vents aren't blocked by furniture, rugs, curtains, or storage boxes.

Blocked registers can make rooms uncomfortable and may interfere with airflow through your heating system.

Vacuum dust and debris from accessible vent covers, too.

💡 Quick Tip: Keep supply and return vents unobstructed. Don't close large numbers of registers in an attempt to save energy unless your system was designed for that.

🌡️ 3. Test Your Thermostat Before the First Really Cold Night

Don't wait until a freezing evening to discover that your thermostat isn't communicating properly with your furnace.

Switch it to heating mode and set the temperature a few degrees above the current room temperature.

Confirm that the system starts, warm air reaches the rooms, and the system eventually shuts off at the set temperature.

💡 Quick Tip: If your thermostat uses replaceable batteries, check them now.

🚪 4. Look for Drafts Around Doors and Windows

Even small gaps can let heated air escape and cold air enter.

On a breezy day, carefully feel around door frames, window edges, and baseboards for drafts.

Replace damaged weatherstripping and add a door sweep where needed.

💡 Quick Tip: For older windows, removable interior window insulation film can provide an inexpensive extra layer of protection during winter.

🚨 5. Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

This is especially important as furnaces, fireplaces, and other fuel-burning appliances begin seeing more use.

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly.

Test your carbon monoxide alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions, check their expiration dates, and replace batteries where applicable.

💡 Quick Tip: Have working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Follow local requirements and manufacturer guidance for placement.

🌀 6. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans for Winter

Here's a simple trick many homeowners overlook.

During winter, most ceiling fans can be set to rotate clockwise at a low speed, helping redistribute warm air that collects near the ceiling.

Stand beneath the fan and check the direction of rotation. Use the reverse switch or remote setting if needed.

💡 Quick Tip: Run the fan slowly enough that you don't feel an uncomfortable draft.

💧 7. Check Your Humidity Levels

Winter heating can leave indoor air feeling dry, contributing to dry skin, static electricity, and general discomfort.

An inexpensive hygrometer can tell you the humidity level inside your home.

During colder months, many homes are comfortable at roughly 30–50% relative humidity, although lower levels may be necessary in very cold weather to prevent condensation.

💡 Quick Tip: If you notice moisture collecting on windows, reduce indoor humidity and investigate ventilation or insulation problems.

⭐ Bonus Tip: Don't Forget Daylight Saving Time!

⏰ Sunday, November 1, 2026 — 2:00 AM

Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, so clocks fall back one hour.

It's a convenient reminder to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, review emergency supplies, and check any household timers that don't update automatically.

❤️ A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

You don't need to spend an entire weekend getting your home ready for colder weather.

Just 30–60 minutes spent checking your heating system, vents, thermostat, alarms, and drafty areas can help you catch small issues before they become expensive headaches.

🍁 This weekend, give your home a little attention so you can enjoy a warmer, safer, and more comfortable winter in the Miami Valley!
💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
Al Mahrt was one of Dayton's early football stars. He played quarterback at St. Mary's College (now the University of Dayton) before becoming a standout with the Dayton Triangles. In 1920, the inaugural season of the American Professional Football Association (which later became the NFL), Mahrt led the league with 591 passing yards and 28 completions. He was also named second-team All-Pro.
