Dayton Public Schools Resume RTA Bus Passes Amid Legal Battle

Dayton Public Schools will once again provide Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) bus passes to high school students after a Franklin County judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking a state law that had halted the practice.

The dispute centered on a recent Ohio state budget amendment that effectively prevented only Montgomery County students from receiving district-funded RTA passes, sparking claims from DPS officials of unfair and discriminatory targeting.

Superintendent Dr. David Lawrence stressed the community’s disagreement with the restriction and reinforced the district’s commitment to student rights.

Distribution of RTA passes has resumed for eligible DPS, charter, and parochial school students, who must agree to specific conduct guidelines and visibly display their student ID badges.

The RTA has voiced concerns that public transit routes may not perfectly fit the schedules and needs of students, but will continue working with the district as legal proceedings continue in Dayton.
