Festival Spotlight

🌽 Sweet Corn, Crafts & Family Fun Return to Fairborn!

If there's one food that tastes like an Ohio summer, it's fresh sweet corn — and this weekend Fairborn is celebrating it in a big way! The 44th Annual Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival returns to Community Park on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16 for two days of food, handmade crafts, entertainment and family fun.
What began in 1982 with about 40 booths and a few thousand visitors has grown into one of southwest Ohio's favorite summer festivals. Today, the event attracts more than 45,000 visitors and features approximately 130 arts, crafts and food vendors.

🌽 Come Hungry for the Sweet Corn

Naturally, the star of the weekend is the sweet corn. Festival volunteers serve up freshly steamed corn that has become a tradition for generations of visitors. But don't stop there — you'll also find BBQ chicken, pork chop sandwiches, fresh-cut watermelon and plenty of other festival favorites.

🏆 Fairborn vs. Wright-Patterson — The Corn-Eating Showdown

One of Saturday's most entertaining traditions happens at noon, when representatives from the City of Fairborn take on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in the annual corn-eating contest. Stop by the Information Tent to cheer on your favorite team and see who earns this year's bragging rights.

🎨 Shop More Than 100 Vendors

Come prepared to browse. Approximately 130 handmade arts-and-crafts booths and food vendors are expected throughout Community Park. Shoppers can discover everything from jewelry, quilts and clothing to candles, woodworking, honey, salsa and other locally made treasures.

🎶 Free Entertainment All Weekend

The Festival Music Pavilion will be busy both days with a full schedule of free entertainment. Saturday's performers include the Fairborn Civic Band, Fairborn Regional Orchestra's AC Strings, Celtic Academy Irish Dancers, Sophia and the Shimmy Cats, Young at Heart Line Dancers, Trunk Monkey and Bad Optics.
Sunday brings even more entertainment, including Cardinal Square Dancers, Jordan Chriss, Honey Creek Cloggers, 18 Strings, Miami Valley Dance Center, Dayton Metro Barbershop Chorus, the Gem City Cloggers and Beavercreek School of Rock.

🚂 Plenty for the Kids

Families can make a full afternoon of it. Children's activities run throughout both days, including popular pony rides and train rides. Visitors can also explore the festival's 1840s Pioneer Village, where demonstrations such as candle making, silversmithing and blacksmithing offer a glimpse into life from another era.

💡 Insider Tip

With tens of thousands of people attending over the weekend, arriving earlier in the day is a smart move. You'll have more time to browse the craft booths, grab your sweet corn and find a good spot to enjoy the entertainment before the biggest crowds arrive.
Why It's Worth Going: The Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival is everything a hometown summer festival should be — good food, local crafts, live entertainment and activities for the whole family. Add free admission and free parking, and it's an easy choice for a late-summer weekend adventure in the Miami Valley. And, of course, don't leave without an ear or two of that famous sweet corn!

🌿 Glenn Thompson Reserve – A Quiet Escape Along the Little Miami River

If you're looking for a peaceful outdoor destination without the crowds of some of the Miami Valley's larger parks, Glenn Thompson Reserve deserves a spot on your list. Tucked between Xenia and Beavercreek along the Little Miami River, this small Greene County preserve is a wonderful place for hiking, fishing, canoeing and simply enjoying a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature.
At roughly 49 acres, Glenn Thompson Reserve isn't a sprawling destination where you need an entire day to explore. That's part of its charm. The wooded river corridor, trails and easy access to the water make it ideal when you want a quick nature getaway close to home.

🌊 Follow the Little Miami River

The Little Miami River is the star attraction here. Trails wind through the wooded floodplain while the sound of moving water provides the perfect soundtrack for your walk. Mature trees, elderberry bushes and the riverbank create a surprisingly peaceful setting considering how close the reserve is to Xenia, Beavercreek and U.S. 35.

🥾 Take a Relaxing Walk

Glenn Thompson Reserve is a good choice when you're looking for a shorter, easier nature walk rather than a strenuous hike. The mostly flat terrain passes through floodplain woods and offers frequent opportunities to enjoy views of the river.
Slow down while you walk and take a closer look at the trees and plants around you. Large sycamores, walnuts and Osage-orange trees are among the interesting features of this river-bottom environment.

🎣 Bring Your Fishing Pole

The reserve provides access to the Little Miami River and is a popular spot for anglers. Find a quiet place along the bank, cast a line and enjoy one of Ohio's most beautiful waterways. Remember that Ohio fishing regulations and licensing requirements apply.

🛶 See the Reserve From the Water

Prefer paddling to hiking? Canoeing is another great way to experience the area. The Little Miami River offers a completely different perspective from the water, with wooded banks and plenty of opportunities to watch for wildlife as you float downstream.

🦌 Keep an Eye Out for Wildlife

River corridors provide important habitat for birds and other wildlife, so this is a park where it pays to slow down and look around. Bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching, and keep an eye on the riverbank and surrounding woods as you explore.

📍 Plan Your Visit

Location: 509 Trebein Road, Xenia, Ohio 45385
Park Size: Approximately 49 acres
Best For: Hiking, fishing, canoeing, wildlife watching and quiet nature walks
Setting: Wooded preserve along the Little Miami River

💡 Make It a Relaxing Morning

This isn't necessarily a park you visit to check off a long list of attractions. Instead, bring a cup of coffee, take an unhurried walk beside the river, listen for birds and enjoy having a little corner of the Miami Valley almost to yourself.
Why It's Worth Visiting: Glenn Thompson Reserve is exactly the kind of hidden gem that's easy to overlook. It doesn't have giant playgrounds, elaborate visitor centers or miles upon miles of trails. What it does offer is something increasingly valuable — a quiet stretch of woods and river where you can fish, paddle, walk or simply enjoy nature. If you've explored many of the Miami Valley's better-known parks, Glenn Thompson Reserve gives you somewhere new to discover.

Recipe of the Week

This Week's Recipe

🍅 Fresh Tomato & Italian Sausage Pasta

If your garden—or your neighbor's garden—is overflowing with tomatoes, this is the recipe for you! Fresh Tomato & Italian Sausage Pasta turns ripe summer tomatoes into a simple homemade sauce that's loaded with flavor. Add savory Italian sausage, garlic, fresh basil and Parmesan, and you've got an easy dinner that tastes like summer in a bowl.

🛒 Ingredients

• 12 ounces penne, rigatoni or your favorite pasta
• 1 pound mild or hot Italian sausage
• 5–6 medium ripe tomatoes, chopped
• 1 small onion, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ¼ teaspoon black pepper
• ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
• ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
• ¼ cup chopped fresh basil
• Optional: Fresh mozzarella for serving

👩‍🍳 Directions

1. Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Before draining, reserve about ½ cup of the pasta water.

2. While the pasta cooks, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Remove the sausage from its casing if necessary and cook, breaking it into bite-sized pieces, until browned and cooked through. Remove the sausage and set aside.

3. Add the olive oil and onion to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

4. Stir in the chopped fresh tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Reduce the heat slightly and simmer for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes begin to break down and create a chunky sauce.

5. Return the sausage to the skillet and simmer for another 2–3 minutes.

6. Add the drained pasta and toss everything together. If the sauce seems too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water.

7. Remove from the heat and stir in the fresh basil and Parmesan cheese.

8. Serve immediately with additional Parmesan or pieces of fresh mozzarella on top.

🥖 What to Serve With It

Keep dinner simple with warm garlic bread and a tossed green salad. If you have even more garden vegetables to use, grilled zucchini, peppers or yellow squash make excellent side dishes.

💡 Kitchen Tip

Don't worry about perfect tomatoes! Those extra-ripe tomatoes that are becoming a little too soft for sandwiches are often perfect for pasta sauce. Chop them up and let them simmer—their extra juiciness and sweetness can make the sauce even better.

🌻 6 Things to Do in Your Garden Before Summer Ends

August may feel like the winding-down point for the garden, but there's still plenty you can do. A little attention now can keep flowers blooming, vegetables producing and your landscape looking good while also giving you a head start on fall.

🍅 1. Keep Harvesting Those Vegetables

Don't let ripe tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and zucchini linger too long on the plants. Regular harvesting encourages many vegetable plants to continue producing. Check the garden frequently—warm August weather can turn today's almost-ripe tomato into tomorrow's overripe one surprisingly quickly.

✂️ 2. Deadhead Tired Flowers

Remove spent blooms from annuals and repeat-blooming perennials. Deadheading keeps flower beds looking neat and can encourage some plants to produce another round of blooms rather than putting their energy into making seeds.

🥬 3. Plant a Fall Vegetable Garden

The vegetable garden doesn't have to end with tomatoes and sweet corn. Mid-to-late summer can be a good time to start cool-season crops for a fall harvest. Depending on the variety and planting date, consider lettuce, spinach, radishes, kale and other quick-growing greens. Check the seed packet's days-to-maturity and allow enough time before your area's typical first frost.

💧 4. Water Deeply, Not Just Frequently

August heat can dry the soil quickly. Instead of giving plants a quick sprinkle every day, water deeply enough to reach the root zone when watering is needed. Early morning is generally a good time because less water is lost to evaporation and foliage has time to dry.

🌿 5. Don't Let the Weeds Win

It's tempting to ignore weeds as summer winds down, but many are getting ready to produce seeds. Pulling them now can prevent thousands of new weed seeds from ending up in your garden and creating extra work next year.

🌱 6. Start Thinking About Fall Planting

Take a walk around your yard and make note of empty spots you'd like to improve. Fall can be an excellent planting season for many trees, shrubs and perennials because cooler temperatures reduce heat stress while the soil remains warm enough for root development.

🌼 Bonus Tip: Take Pictures!

Before everything begins changing for fall, take a few photos of your flower beds and vegetable garden. When you're planning next year's garden during the winter, those pictures will remind you exactly where you had bare spots, overcrowded plants or combinations that worked especially well.

💡 Quick Tip

Don't give up on the garden yet! Some of the nicest gardening weather is still ahead. A little cleanup and planning in August can mean more vegetables and flowers this fall—and considerably less work when spring rolls around again.
