💎 Discover Oakes Quarry Park – One of the Miami Valley's Best Hidden Gems

Located in Fairborn just minutes from Dayton, Oakes Quarry Park is unlike any other park in southwest Ohio. Once an active limestone quarry, this 200+ acre park has been transformed into a beautiful natural area featuring crystal-clear blue quarry ponds, scenic hiking trails, native prairie, woodlands, and one of the world's most impressive collections of ancient marine fossils.
Whether you're looking for an easy afternoon hike, a unique photography destination, or an outdoor adventure with the family, Oakes Quarry Park offers a fascinating mix of natural beauty and geological history that's hard to find anywhere else in the Dayton area.

ðŸĨū Easy Trails with Amazing Views

The park's easy two-mile loop trail winds through woodlands, restored prairie, ponds, and dramatic limestone formations. Along the way you'll discover scenic overlooks, colorful wildflowers, abundant wildlife, and peaceful spots perfect for a picnic or simply enjoying nature. The relatively flat terrain makes it a great destination for hikers of nearly all ages and skill levels.

ðŸĶī Step Back 425 Million Years

One of the park's biggest attractions is its remarkable fossil beds. More than 425 million years ago, this area was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Today, visitors can still see fossilized coral reefs, crinoids, brachiopods, and other ancient marine life embedded in the limestone. Interpretive signs throughout the park explain the area's fascinating geological history, making every visit both educational and fun.

ðŸ“ļ A Photographer's Dream

The bright blue quarry ponds, towering limestone cliffs, rolling prairie grasses, and panoramic views make Oakes Quarry Park one of the most photogenic outdoor locations in the Miami Valley. Sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful, when the changing light reflects off the water and highlights the rugged landscape.

ðŸŽĢ More to Explore

In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy catch-and-release fishing in designated ponds, birdwatching, horseback riding on select trails, and seasonal wildflower viewing. Oakes Quarry also connects with nearby Pearl's Fen, a rare wetland preserve that can be explored on a longer hike for those looking to extend their adventure.

Recipe of the Week

This Week's Recipe

🍅 Parmesan Herb Stuffed Zucchini Boats

August is the perfect time to enjoy fresh garden vegetables, and these Parmesan Herb Stuffed Zucchini Boats are an easy way to showcase the season's harvest. Packed with savory chicken, tomatoes, herbs, and melted cheese, they're hearty enough for dinner while still feeling light and fresh.

🛒 Ingredients

• 4 medium zucchini
• 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, diced
• 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
• ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• Salt and black pepper to taste

ðŸ‘Đ‍ðŸģ Directions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.

2. Slice each zucchini in half lengthwise and scoop out the center, leaving about ¼ inch around the edges to create "boats."

3. Heat olive oil in a skillet and sauté the garlic for one minute. Add the shredded chicken, tomatoes, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and stir in half of the mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese.

5. Fill each zucchini boat with the mixture and place them in a lightly greased baking dish.

6. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan over the top.

7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the zucchini is tender and the cheese is melted and lightly golden.

8. Garnish with additional fresh basil before serving.

ðŸĨ— Serving Suggestions

Serve with garlic bread, a fresh garden salad, or sweet corn on the cob for a complete summer meal. It's also a great recipe for using vegetables from your own garden or local farmers market.

ðŸ’Ą Kitchen Tip

Don't throw away the scooped-out zucchini! Chop it up and add it to soups, pasta sauce, omelets, or stir-fries. It's an easy way to reduce waste and add extra vegetables to your meals.

🚊 5 Home Projects to Tackle Before Fall Arrives

Summer is flying by, making now the perfect time to get a head start on a few simple home maintenance projects. Completing these tasks before cooler weather arrives can help prevent costly repairs and make your home more comfortable throughout the fall and winter.

🍂 1. Inspect Your Gutters

Remove leaves, twigs, and debris before autumn begins. Clean gutters allow rainwater to drain properly and help protect your roof, siding, and foundation from water damage.

🊟 2. Check Windows and Doors

Look for worn weatherstripping or small gaps around windows and doors. Replacing old seals now can improve energy efficiency and lower heating bills once temperatures begin to drop.

ðŸŒģ 3. Trim Shrubs and Trees

Cut back branches that touch your home or hang over the roof. Trimming now promotes healthy growth and reduces the chance of storm damage later in the year.

ðŸ”Ĩ 4. Schedule Your Furnace Tune-Up

Heating companies get busy once cooler weather arrives. Scheduling a maintenance check now helps ensure your furnace is ready before the first chilly night of the season.

ðŸšŋ 5. Check Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Inspect hoses for leaks and make sure outdoor faucets are working properly. Replacing worn washers or damaged hoses now can help prevent bigger plumbing issues later.

ðŸ’Ą Quick Tip

Create a simple home maintenance checklist and complete one project each weekend. By the time fall arrives, you'll have your home in great shape without feeling overwhelmed.
