✈️ Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

Few places in America can claim to have changed the world quite like Dayton. The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park preserves the sites where Wilbur and Orville Wright transformed the dream of human flight into reality and celebrates the life of their friend, renowned poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Established in 1992, the park tells the story of innovation, perseverance, and achievement that put Dayton on the map as the birthplace of aviation.
Unlike most national parks, this one is spread across several historic locations throughout the Dayton area. Together, these sites tell the remarkable story of how two bicycle mechanics from Ohio forever changed transportation and connected the world through flight.

🚲 Where the Dream Began

While many people associate the Wright brothers with Kitty Hawk, it was at Huffman Prairie near Dayton where they perfected the world's first practical airplane. In 1904 and 1905, the brothers conducted hundreds of flights here, proving that controlled, sustained flight was possible. Today, visitors can walk the same grounds where aviation history was made.

📚 Honoring Paul Laurence Dunbar

The park also preserves the home of Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of America's most influential African American writers. A close friend of the Wright brothers, Dunbar achieved national acclaim through his poetry, novels, and essays, leaving a lasting impact on American literature.

🏛️ More Than One Historic Site

The park includes several significant locations, including the Wright Cycle Company Complex, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, Hawthorn Hill (Orville Wright's home), the Paul Laurence Dunbar House, and the Wright Flyer III at Carillon Historical Park. Together, these sites provide a fascinating look at Dayton's role in shaping both aviation and American history.

👨‍👩‍👧 Perfect For

• Aviation enthusiasts
• History buffs
• Families
• Students
• Dayton residents
• Visitors exploring Ohio's heritage

💡 Pro Tip

Start your visit at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center downtown. It provides an excellent overview of the park and helps visitors plan which historic sites they would like to explore next.
Why it's worth visiting: Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park isn't just about airplanes—it's about imagination, determination, and the people who changed the world. For anyone who has ever looked up at an airplane and wondered how it all began, there's no better place to visit than the city where the age of flight truly took wing.

🦟 5 Simple Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Out of Your Backyard

Summer evenings are meant for relaxing on the patio, grilling with friends, and enjoying time outdoors—not swatting mosquitoes. Fortunately, a few simple steps can dramatically reduce mosquito activity around your home.
The best approach is to make your yard less inviting to mosquitoes before they become a problem.

💧 1. Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes can breed in surprisingly small amounts of water. Check birdbaths, flower pots, gutters, buckets, and children's toys regularly and empty any standing water.

✂️ 2. Keep Grass and Shrubs Trimmed

Mosquitoes love cool, shady hiding places during the day. Regular mowing and trimming can reduce areas where they rest.

🌿 3. Plant Mosquito-Repelling Plants

Citronella, lavender, basil, rosemary, and marigolds are popular plants that may help discourage mosquitoes while adding beauty to your yard and garden.

🌀 4. Use Outdoor Fans

Mosquitoes are weak fliers. A simple outdoor fan on your patio or deck can make it much harder for them to reach you while also helping keep you cool.

🔥 5. Consider a Fire Pit

While not a complete solution, smoke from a fire pit can help deter mosquitoes and create a comfortable gathering place for summer evenings.

💡 Pro Tip

Mosquitoes are most active around dawn and dusk. If you're planning outdoor activities, a fan plus insect repellent can make a huge difference during peak mosquito hours.
Why it matters: A mosquito-free backyard means more time enjoying summer cookouts, family gatherings, and peaceful evenings outdoors.
