Featured Park

🌄 Featured Park: Wright Brothers Pinnacles Historical Hiking Trail

A rugged river trail with aviation history in Moraine

The Wright Brothers Pinnacles Historical Hiking Trail is one of the most unique and lesser-known hiking experiences in the Dayton area. Located along the Great Miami River in Moraine, this trail combines steep limestone bluffs, river views, and deep ties to Dayton’s aviation legacy.

✈️ A Trail with History

The trail is named for the Wright brothers, who spent time exploring the Great Miami River corridor. Interpretive signage along the route highlights the area’s natural features and its connection to Dayton’s role as the Birthplace of Aviation.

🥾 The Hiking Experience

This is not a casual stroll. The Pinnacles trail features narrow paths, elevation changes, rocky footing, and dramatic overlooks above the river. It’s short in distance but feels adventurous, making it a favorite among experienced local hikers.

  • Steep climbs and descents
  • Limestone outcroppings and wooded bluffs
  • Scenic views of the Great Miami River
  • Quiet, less-crowded atmosphere

🧭 Visitor Tips

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes — footing can be uneven.
  • Best for older kids and adults; not stroller-friendly.
  • Avoid after heavy rain, as trails can be slick.
  • Bring water and allow extra time for climbs.
Local Tip: This is one of the most rugged hikes in Montgomery County.
Best Time to Visit: Fall and early spring offer the best views and cooler temperatures.

For hikers looking for something challenging, scenic, and deeply connected to Dayton history, the Wright Brothers Pinnacles Historical Hiking Trail delivers a memorable outdoor experience.

Recipe of the Week

🍎 Recipe of the Week: Pork Chops with Apple & Onion Gravy

Savory & slightly sweet • Perfect fall-to-winter comfort food

This pork chops recipe combines tender, pan-seared pork with a rich apple and onion gravy that feels both cozy and classic. It’s a great way to bring seasonal flavors to the dinner table without a lot of extra work.

Ingredients

  • 4 bone-in pork chops
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large apple (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), sliced
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch + 1 Tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Season pork chops on both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Sear pork chops 3–4 minutes per side until golden; remove and set aside.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and add butter, onions, and apples.
  5. Cook 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
  6. Stir in thyme, chicken broth, and apple cider vinegar.
  7. Return pork chops to skillet, cover, and simmer 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Remove pork chops; stir in cornstarch slurry to thicken gravy.
  9. Spoon gravy over pork chops and serve.
Dayton Tip: Bone-in pork chops stay juicier than boneless.
Swap It: Use apple cider instead of broth for a sweeter gravy.
Serve With: Mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or buttered noodles.

Savory pork, sweet apples, and rich gravy — this is comfort food that feels just right for the season.

Home Tips

🏠 Home Tips of the Week: Getting Ready for Heavy Snow

Simple steps to protect your home and stay safe this weekend

With significant snowfall expected this weekend, a little preparation now can help prevent damage, reduce stress, and make snow cleanup much easier once the storm passes.

❄️ 1. Clear Vents & Outdoor Openings

Make sure furnace, dryer, and bathroom vents are free of snow buildup. Blocked vents can cause moisture problems and even dangerous carbon monoxide issues.

🏡 2. Protect Entryways & Walkways

  • Lay down ice melt before snow begins.
  • Place mats inside and outside doors to reduce tracked-in moisture.
  • Keep a shovel accessible — not buried in the garage.

💧 3. Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams form when snow melts and refreezes along roof edges. Clear gutters where possible and gently remove excess snow from roof edges using a roof rake.

🔥 4. Prepare for Power Outages

  • Charge phones and backup batteries.
  • Have flashlights ready (avoid candles).
  • Know how to safely use generators — never indoors.

🚗 5. Don’t Forget Vehicles

Move cars away from trees if possible, lift windshield wipers, and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case of delays.

Dayton Tip: Heavy, wet snow is more likely to cause outages and roof stress.
After the Storm: Shovel early and often to avoid ice buildup.

A little snow prep now can save hours of cleanup — and prevent winter damage later.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

The Great Flood of 1913 devastated Dayton when days of heavy rain caused the Great Miami River and its tributaries to overflow, killing more than 360 people and destroying thousands of homes — a disaster that ultimately led to the creation of the Miami Conservancy District, whose innovative flood-control system has protected the region ever since.

Carillon Historical Park was developed in the aftermath of the devastating Great Flood of 1913 to help educate the public about flood prevention and regional resilience, and today it highlights the Miami Conservancy District’s innovative flood-control system alongside Dayton’s rich history of invention and industry.
